Space Exploration - Around the Solar System

Saturn and Moons
NASA/JPL/Space Science Institute
NASA has extended the hugely successful Cassini-Huygens mission to Saturn another two years and sixty orbits. The mission, originally due to end Jul. 2008, has already run for over a decade.

The extended mission allows for 26 flybys of Saturn’s moon Titan, seven of Enceladus, and one each of Dione, Rhea and Helene. Further study of Saturn's rings, its complex magnetosphere and the planet itself is also scheduled.

Richard Garriott, the 46-year-old creator of the Ultima series of computer games, will become the world’s sixth space tourist in Oct. 2008. It has cost him a cool US$30 million to join that select few.

Garriott was born in Cambridge, England on Jul. 4, 1961. His father was astronaut Owen, would later fly aboard Skylab and the Space Shuttle.

Phobos
NASA/JPL-Caltech/U of Arizona
NASA today released two high-resolution images of the larger of Mars' two moons, Phobos. The High Resolution Imaging Science Experiment (HiRISE) camera on NASA's Mars Reconnaissance Orbiter took the on Mar. 23, 2008.

HiRISE took the images within 10 minutes of each other. The first image was taken at a range of about 4,200 miles; the second was taken at a distance of about 3,600 miles. The images are coloured by combining data from the camera's blue-green, red and near-infrared channels.

Dwarf Planet 2003 EL61
Space Exploration - Around the Solar System

(136108) 2003 EL61
A Field/NASA
(136108) 2003 EL61, is the third-largest known dwarf planet orbiting beyond Neptune. It is cigar shaped, being as wide as Pluto along its long axis (1960 km), but half of that along its short axis (996 km). It has an estimated mass of 28 percent that of Pluto’s. The object spins head-over-heals once every four hours.

The composition of 2003 EL61 is mainly rock, with an icy coating. This coating makes the object very bright, approaching that of pure snow.

A Brief Overview the Solar System

The Solar System
IAU
Nowadays, the solar system consists of the Sun, eight planets and many other minor bodies. It used to have nine planets, but Pluto was recently demoted to the status of a dwarf planet.

There are quite a few mnemonics for remembering the order of the planets. My favourite is My Very Elderly Mother Just Served Us Nine Pizzas.
